WOW! is the reaction upon entering this unique home, even from jaded realtors and building inspectors. A gifted and whimsical architect sought out a dilapidated ruin to convert into a modern artwork and this is the result of 30 years he put into the barn.
Soaring ceilings with exposed joists form amazing geometric shapes and appear completely original and uninsulated, but appearances are deceiving: the architect himself removed the old roof from the outside and layered 8.5" of board insulation from above to retain the original look inside.
The main entry is 1 of 6 exteriors doors. This front entryway leads into a wide open space with oxidized poured cement radiant-heated floors and numerous huge windows looking out at the beautiful landscape of Saugerties, NY. In the adjacent property is a rather cinematic graveyard with toppled headstones sliding down a hillside that appear to clearly be where zombies must arise from.
The house's main entry leads to a 50' long, 14' wide hallway with ~30' ceilings, exposed beams, 12' tall functioning divider doors, and 10' tall windows at both the north and south ends for incredible light all day. Long shots can be made from upwards of 60' away, from above, below, or across the lofts on the 2nd floor. At the end of the long/wide open hallway is a 12' custom made Indian rosewood farm table with 9 Normann Copenhagen chairs and an open kitchen.
One of the 14x25' lofts is currently used as an office and video game area for kids and adults, and the other has an ultra-high-end audio/video system with pullout sofas and club chairs. Windows big and small are everywhere, even in the interior walls to allow light to pass through the East side of the house through the hallway ways and into the rest of the house. A 5' diameter skeleton church-style clock sits 15+ feet high along one wall.
The existing bathrooms retain the feel of 150yo house, while offering the comforts of an industrial looking shower and a 150 gallon copper tub, which could be used for period piece shots.
The lower level of a 2-story bedroom functions as a guest room with a beautifully hidden Murphy bed and a professional Balanced Body Pilates area, including a Studio Reformer and Exo Chair, mats, exercise balls. The room has original touches of the apple crating and chicken coop that it once functioned as.
Vintage stairways inside and out, industrial features, barn glass, sliding barn panels, tongue in groove kitchen cabinets, exterior walls that appear inside of rooms... the house is an outstanding location for the most creative director and cinematographer with so many textures, backgrounds, and interior/exterior options. Outside, the barn has a small pasture/meadow with a spectacular old Mulberry tree and a vintage farm rake. We are situated on an historic country road with impressive estates that overlook the Hudson. A waterfall can be heard in the distance, and a lighthouse is about 1.5 miles away down a hiking trail.
The house is 2 hours door-to-door from Manhattan and 20 minutes from Woodstock, Kingston, Hunter, Catskill, and 30 minutes from Rhinebeck where we keep a champion white Lusitano horse, that is available for hire, as is our exotic red abyssinian cat. Saugerties has a variety of excellent restaurants and a vintage 1950s neon marquee movie theater, and no permits are required for shooting on our property or the home.
