Gaines Residence

This is a custom-built west coast contemporary, post and beam home designed by architect Brian Hemingway of West Vancouver, BC. Recently completed in November 2022, this single-storey private residence is 6,600 square feet (613 sq metres) in area and 240 feet (73 metres) in length. It sits on a south-facing 1-acre property with 480 feet (146 metres) of walk-on waterfront in the West Sechelt area of the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia. The home features an airy, open floor plan in the main living areas, with 14 foot ceilings and a combination of wood (fir) and granite tile flooring. The kitchen/dining room area and the great room each feature a 40-foot long skylight running the entire length of these rooms, separated by the floor-to-ceiling fireplace clad in Cambrian black granite tile. These areas of the house have a true inside out character with large custom-built wooden sliding glass doors in each room leading out to the ocean-side patio that runs along the entire waterfront side of the house. The patio also features an outside kitchen and a firepit. The house has 3 bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom, and 2 additional powder rooms. All bedrooms face the water to the south and have large wooden sliding glass doors opening onto their own private patio areas. The master suite features a built-in king size bed with built-in cabinetry as well as a large closet and ensuite. The ensuite has a soaker tub built into a uniquely designed alcove area, a separate steam shower and a water closet featuring a glass ceiling. There is a 2-car garage attached to the home and a concrete driveway. The privacy of the home is protected on the road-side by a high berm that runs the entire length of the property from the driveway to the far southeast corner of the property. The berm is planted with a variety of indigenous tress and shrubs, obscuring the home from the road. There are 4 additional small cabins/outbuildings on the property currently used for storage. The property also includes an additional 2-acre parcel of land directly across the street from the house that is available for parking and storage of vehicles, trailers, etc.
