Located in a low-slung Victorian warehouse with a pared-back industrial envelope, just East of Downtown,This new home in Toronto offered a blank slate. A sense of discovery and intimacy in this wide-open 12,660 sq. ft. space was thoughtfully articulated by Studio Sebastian Herkner, adding a playful, reconfigurable partitioning. With a nod to the brands’ beginnings, a gallery-like approach was taken, using partition walls to promote displays as installations or exhibitions. The historic brick factory, founded by Albert Henry Wagstaff, originally employed 400 people, and produced 60 million bricks annually, integral to the construction of the Distillery, Old City Hall, and countless Toronto homes. the designer's intervention brings touches of design balanced with the historical context of the building. “The central opaque structure brings focus without interrupting the open feeling of this old brick factory. We wanted to make a comfortable space that the team can use in many ways; a place for conversations, gathering, and connecting – these are things that are important to the space and to me.”
