About This Space
4,000 sq ft
The building at 314 Rock Island in Dallas is an industrial-style structure dating back to the early 20th century. Originally built in 1903, it housed the Southern Rock Island Plow Company, a significant player in the agricultural equipment sector during that time. The architecture reflects its industrial roots with a sturdy, utilitarian design typical of warehouses from that era. It's known for its historical significance, contributing to the fabric of Dallas' industrial heritage, and is made of steel and concrete with a functional, no-frills aesthetic. A Quonset hut is a lightweight, prefabricated structure known for its distinctive semi-cylindrical, arched shape. Made from corrugated steel or aluminum, it has a self-supporting design with no internal beams, allowing for open, versatile interior space. Originally developed during World War II for military purposes, Quonset huts are valued for their durability, ease of assembly, and adaptability to various climates. Their curved roof efficiently sheds rain and snow, making them practical for both temporary and long-term use in a variety of environments. Here are a few examples of movies where a Quonset hut is featured: 1. The Thing from Another World (1951) – The huts serve as a remote Arctic research station. 2.
