Affectionately known as “Rose Cottage Farm” among local villagers, the property is beautifully situated in the Hudson Valley, near the Catskills in lower Upstate New York. The property dates back to 1847, when a farming family nursed the pastures, cultivated the fruit trees, and reared numerous animals on the lands surrounding the stone house. Over the decades, improvements were made to the impeccable structure, including a beautiful enclosed wooden nook overlooking the horse pasture. Two rustic cottages fashioned from 18th- and 19th-century barn wood romantically dot the picture-perfect grounds. Upon arrival, make your way down the tree-lined driveway where the crop land greets you to the left and the horse pasture beckons to your right. Nature completely envelopes the surroundings and challenges you to resist the urge to pull out a picnic basket and blanket. Look around to spot the lush wildlife of beautiful plants and occasional animals, including chickadees, woodpeckers, blue jays, chipmunks, squirrels and wild turkeys. Step into the family house built with multi-hued stone walls and be greeted by beautifully stenciled wooden floors. Relax in the comfortable country-style living room decorated with vintage furniture and furnishings. Perch on one of the window benches to gaze out into the open fields and gardens. In the morning, enjoy a coffee in the sunny breakfast room inspired by Old World country-style homes. Fireplaces are found throughout the house, and some of the original 170-year-old tools still adorn the kitchen. The house’s master bedroom is named after former resident Laura Ashley, the legendary designer who built her fashion and furnishings empire around the Romantic English style characterized by a 19th century rural sensibility. The romantic Ashley Room on the second floor of the stone house boasts a beautiful rose, crimson and white color palette. Light from west- and north-facing windows bathes the room invitingly. Indulge in the en-suite bathroom featuring a claw-foot tub atop natural pebble stones and against a 170-year-old stone wall. The Wilkison Room on the second floor of the stone house boasts a color palette of blue, slate, cedar and cotton. The room features the original exposed ceiling wood beams with a 170-year-old stone wall running along the length of the room. The Clarkson Room comprises the top (third) floor of the stone house, and is bathed in hues of blue and white under the charming sloping ceilings. Luxuriate in the bathroom with a freestanding air jet bathtub and separate rain shower. The Manchester Cottage located steps from the stone house is bathed in natural hues of sandstone, wheat and ivory. The spacious bedroom is beautifully lit by multi-paned French doors and windows on three walls. The bathroom includes a spacious separate shower that leads to a petite room with a copper Japanese soaking tub.
