Historic & Haunted Merchant Hotel (Office And Events)

Listed as one of the most haunted places in America by Conde Nast, USA Today, Thrillist and Cosmopolitan Magazine. One of the last remaining examples of cast-iron Italianate architecture, this 4-story building was once a premier hotel and it sits above a significant portion of the Shanghai Tunnels, a network of interconnected basements and passageways beneath Portland's Old Town Chinatown. Built in the late 19th century, these tunnels historically connected hotels to the Willamette River. Local legend claims they were used for "shanghaiing" (kidnapping men for ship crews) and human trafficking and the hotel is known to be haunted by a ghost in a black dress, Nina (nine-ah). The upper floors feature original doors and woodwork, high ceilings, wood floors and modernized office interiors, exposed brick and a grand ballroom. Other features include an original fireplace, photography studio, kitchen areas and charming artist studios. Building is located directly adjacent to mass-transit, parking, accommodations at the Society Hotel and is a 10-minute walk to the Willamette River and Voodoo Donuts.
